● Kaname Takai (56), the owner of a foundry shop, and Juro Towada, the owner of a fish shop, have been classmates since childhood. They have always complemented and supported each other.
To make Juro's work easier, the kind-hearted Kaname spent just three days making a knife rack and an iron stand (gotoku) for a shichirin charcoal brazier. In return, Juro always enjoys bringing simmered yellowtail and daikon (buri daikon) to visit Kaname every evening. Since Kaname often gets so absorbed in his work that he forgets to eat supper, the two take the opportunity to chat and exchange stories.
Kaname's most treasured possession is a Japanese-style teapot (kyūsu) made by his grandfather. It is such an exquisite masterpiece that he would never part with it, no matter how high the price offered. He continues to hone his skills diligently, hoping that one day he will surpass his grandfather.
Several years ago, Kaname was deeply impressed when he tried the remarkably stretchy ice cream sold by Kumai Senbei. Since then, blind taste-testing rice crackers (kiki senbei) has become his specialty.
When Kumai Senbei appeared on a television program for an interview, Kaname was also invited to appear as a guest. This remains a little story he proudly recounts to this day.
