A total of 105 cars of this commuter electric multiple unit were manufactured between 1954 and 1959.
Due to its all-green livery and distinctive rounded body shape, which is wider at the bottom and narrower at the top, the train was affectionately nicknamed the “Frog” (Aogaeru / 青ガエル) by passengers.
The train adopted monocoque construction technology derived from the aviation industry to achieve an ultra-lightweight body. It was also the first train in Japan to mass-produce the right-angle Cardan drive system, significantly reducing vehicle weight and making it a pioneer in the lightweight design of Japanese railway rolling stock.
