883 Series "Sonic" (Yellow) 5-Car Set

● The 883 series debuted in 1995 (Heisei 7) with the aim of speeding up and improving service on the Nippo Main Line. It was JR Kyushu's first tilting train and Japan's first AC tilting train for commercial use. Initially, five 7-car sets and three 5-car sets were manufactured, each featuring a different front panel design depending on the year of manufacture. The 5-car sets had their front panels colored silver, yellow, and dark blue to give them individuality. From 2005 (Heisei 17) onwards, a renewal project was carried out, unifying the exterior to its current metallic blue. Furthermore, in 2008 (Heisei 20), the 5-car sets were converted to 7-car sets, making all sets 7-car. In 2025 (Reiwa 7), to commemorate the 30th anniversary of its debut, the first set (AO-1) was given a commemorative wrapping, which is currently running for a limited time until the end of the year.


◆KATO is re-releasing a 5-car set from its 883 series featuring a distinctive yellow front cover, after a long hiatus.

① Reproduces the AO-7 formation belonging to the Oita Vehicle Center, as it appeared around 1997-2006.
② Reproduces the distinctive yellow front cover on a light blue and silver body.
③ Headlights and taillights illuminate. Headlights are reproduced in a warm white color, and fog lights in yellow.
④ Equipped with KATO's unique body tilting mechanism, which reproduces the inward tilt of the car body when passing through curves, just like the real train.
⑤ The power unit is equipped with the highly regarded GM-5 motor, ensuring stable running.
⑥ The undercarriage and bogies are colored blue-gray, and the couplers are black.
⑦ The intermediate car connections use KATO close-coupling couplers with jumper pipes.
⑧ Destination display stickers included.
