Kato 10-2174 N Scale Series 50-2000 Passenger Cars (JR Version) 3-Car Set
● The Series 50 passenger cars were introduced in 1977 (Showa 52) as general-purpose passenger coaches to replace older rolling stock, and were widely used for local trains on regional main lines. The series is mainly divided into three types:
.Series 50 (0 series) for Honshu, without electric heating
.Series 50-2000 series equipped with electric heating
.Series 51 for use in Hokkaido
The OhaFu 50 type includes a conductor’s compartment. As passenger coaches can be freely arranged in formations, they were used in a wide variety of operations ranging from long formations of more than 10 cars to short 2-car sets. This model represents the 2000 series equipped with electric heating, produced in the post-JR privatization appearance with the JR logo added to the side of the OhaFu 50.
◆ By combining it with the ED78 (1st Batch, JR version), EF71 (1st Batch, JR version), and ED75 700 (JR version), you can recreate the “Red Train” local services in the Tohoku region during the early JR era.
With N scale, you can also enjoy the evolution of local trains in the Tohoku region—from old-style passenger coaches to the Series 50 and later the 701 series AC EMUs.
Main Features
① The Series 50 passenger cars, known by the nickname “Red Train,” are reproduced in their post-JR privatization appearance with the JR logo on the OhaFu 50 body.
② In addition to the JR logo, the car numbers and depot marking (“Aki-Aki”) are newly created.
③ The OhaFu 50 features tail lights on both sides that switch depending on the direction of travel, and includes a light-off switch, allowing it to be realistically placed in the middle of a train formation.
④ The roof comes with integrated ventilators as standard, but by using the separately sold 11-551 Series 50 Passenger Car Upgrade Parts Set, the ventilators can be replaced with separate parts.
⑤ The couplers are bogie-mounted Arnold couplers as standard, and can be converted to body-mounted couplers using the separately sold close-coupler set.
⑥ The 3-car set book-style case can additionally store two locomotives (excluding H-grade models) and two passenger cars.
