E4 Series Shinkansen "Max Toki" 8-Car Set
The E4 Series Shinkansen debuted in 1994 (Heisei 6) as the second all-double-decker Shinkansen after the E1 Series.
It operates in 8-car train sets, and offers a variety of configurations: 8-car sets alone, 15-car sets coupled with E3 Series trains, and 16-car sets coupled with 8-car sets.
Furthermore, its passenger capacity of 1,634 people in a 16-car set (8 cars + 8 cars) is one of the largest for high-speed rail in the world, and is registered in the Guinness World Records.
It is truly a massive Shinkansen in every sense of the word.
Since its introduction, the train was nicknamed "Max (Multi Amenity eXpress)" and operated on the Tohoku and Joetsu Shinkansen lines.
However, after the introduction of the E5 series, its operation mainly shifted to the Joetsu Shinkansen, and in its later years, it operated as "Max Toki" and "Max Tanigawa." Its regular service ended on October 1, 2021, much to the regret of many.
Initially, it operated with a yellow stripe, but from 2014 onwards, like the refurbished E1 series, the stripe was changed to a crested ibis color (pink), and the symbol mark painted on the side of the train was also changed to a crested ibis mark.
