The 813 series, primarily active in the Hakata and Kitakyushu areas, is JR Kyushu's first VVVF inverter-equipped train, with a total of 255 units produced by 2009. The units are subdivided by production year, with the 200 series being the largest group, manufactured between 1997 and 1998. The 300 series, a minority with only three formations, differs from the 200 series by its UV-cut smoked glass.
The 813 series can be operated in a compact 3-car formation, or expanded to 6-car or 9-car formations, allowing for different setups depending on track conditions or personal preference.
Additionally, the 813 series 200 series on the Fukuhoku Yutaka Line connecting Fukuoka and the central city of Chikuhō's Nogata features a silver body with a black face, offering a distinctive color scheme.
