Kato 3066-S N Scale EF81 408 JR Freight Test-Livery Locomotive

To commemorate the KATO N Gauge Railway Model Festival (Kyushu), we are releasing a model of the EF81 408 JR Freight Test-Livery Locomotive.
The EF81 400 series was introduced in 1986 (Showa 61) to replace the EF30, with 14 units converted from standard locomotives for use in the Kanmon Tunnel, connecting Honshu and Kyushu. The 400 series is equipped with a multiple-unit control device to enable double-heading operations in the humid environment of the Kanmon Tunnel.

Among them, EF81-408 received a distinctive livery after the JR transition: a two-tone blue paint scheme with a white stripe, giving it a unique appearance. A similar livery was also applied to the ED76, refreshing the image of locomotives hauling freight trains. Notably, 408 was the only unit in the EF81 400 series to receive this test livery, making it a very special locomotive.
Later, EF81-408 also operated on the Japan Sea Main Line, but eventually returned to its original paint and continued supporting freight operations in Kyushu.
