The Series 50 is a general type passenger car that was introduced in 1978. It replaced the old passenger cars operated mainly in provincial urban areas and played a leading role in the modernisation of passenger car transport. It was nicknamed 'Red Train' because of its red paint job, which gave the train a completely new look. With its modern car body equipped with automatic doors, sash windows, and a mixture of transverse and longitudinal seating, it contributed to reducing congestion and improving safety. It was used nationwide in regional line sections, together with Hokkaido's 51 coaches.
The Series 50-51 coaches were introduced in 1979 for the Hokkaido region, and a total of 130 coaches were built to operate on Hokkaido's main trunk lines, from Hakodate to Wakkanai in the north and Abashiri in the east. They were retired in 1994 and are still considered important trains from Hokkaido's JNR era.
