50 Years Ago: Departure of the German Federal Railroad Class 01
The Class 01 Pacific express locomotives were legends and the kings of the German rails. From 1928, they left their mark on high-quality express train services across Germany. Fifty years ago, these rail icons were finally retired from the German Federal Railroad (DB). Before their retirement, they made a grand appearance at the steam locomotive stronghold in Hof, where they pulled express trains, limited-stop fast trains, and passenger trains—some even double-headed—running to Regensburg, via Kulmbach to Lichtenfels, and especially crossing the famous Schiefe Ebene, a 2.5% grade near Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg. In 1972, Hof still employed 14 proud Class 01 locomotives, including road number 01 111, the best-maintained unit. Steam locomotive fans from all over the world flocked to Franconia to witness the final spectacular appearance of the Class 01. In the fall of 1974, the era of the 01 came to an end on the DB. Road number 01 111, which retained its original boiler design and front skirting, was saved from the scrapyard. It now stands at the foot of Schiefe Ebene in the German Steam Locomotive Museum in Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg, commemorating a glorious chapter in German locomotive history.
