The BritishRailways Mk1 was BR’s first standard design for main line coaches, and oneof its most successful. Built from 1951 to the early 1960s, the Mk1 replacedolder designs inherited from the LMS, LNER, GWR, and SR. BR combined the bestfeatures of these older types into a new, steel-bodied design that was strongerand safer.

Thousandsof Mk1 coaches were built, offering first- or second-class seating, or acombination of both. Specialized coaches included catering vehicles, sleeping cars,and Post Office vans equipped for collecting and dropping mail on the move. TheMk1’s success led to many being preserved after retirement from BR service, andhundreds still operate on heritage railways and in charter formations today.
